Tips for Moving to Chicagoland in the Winter

So you're taking the plunge this winter (no, I don't mean polar plunge) and moving to Chicagoland. While you may have heard some horror stories about the weather, there's actually not so much to fear about moving this time of year. In fact, home prices are on average lower and moving companies have way more flexibility since 80% of their moves happen between April and November. That sounds like a pretty good reason to do a winter move if you ask us!
If you're moving to Chicagoland this winter, we've come up with a list of tips to make it as smooth as possible.
- Set your moving company up for success
If you're doing the move with a company (or a few kind friends), set the team up for success by making sure there are clear, dry pathways to your home. Chicagoland is known for its snow, but that doesn't mean you have to be known for not shoveling.
Arrive before your movers to ensure a slip-free path from the truck to your front door. Once inside, set up a staging area where you want the movers to leave your belongings. The goal here is to let your movers get everything inside first, then they can place furniture and such where it belongs once they're fully inside.
- Don't forget your floors
Again, if you're using a moving company, they'll be able to bring speciality floor runners to protect your hardwood floors and carpeted areas. Just communicate with the team ahead of time to ensure they bring the proper materials to keep your floors clean!
If you're moving without a company, you can still utilize these tactics, you'll just have to BYO floor runners. Also consider a mat inside and outside your door, extra towels and a mop to have on hand. No one likes slippery floors while carrying heavy boxes, and you certainly don't want mud or salt stains on your first day home.
- Have a backup plan
The weather is unpredictable, especially in the winter. While we love to plan for success, it's also a good idea to have a backup plan in case a snowstorm has different ideas about your move-in date. A good strategy is to specify your preferred moving date as well as two alternative dates just in case the weather or road conditions prevent your original plan from coming to fruition.
- Turn down the heat
This one is tricky. Chances are, you're going to be moving in temperatures anywhere from ten to thirty degrees, and we sure love the heat in those circumstances. However, your movers (or you) will be working up a sweat carrying your belongings and most likely leaving your door on a constant rotation of open to shut.
Don't waste money heating the entire home while this is happening. Consider utilizing a few space heaters until everything is in the staged setup, then heat your home once the team is fully inside.
