Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kickoff of summer here in Chicagoland. In addition to honoring the brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice while serving the United States military, this long weekend is an opportunity to pause, reflect, enjoy some time with friends and family, and start savoring the changing weather.  This year, Memorial Day weekend is sure to look a little bit different, though Chicagoland is always full of amazing opportunities for things to see and do.  Looking for a little inspiration ahead of Memorial Day weekend 2021? Here are seven activities perfect for making the most of a summery long weekend in Chicagoland:

1.) Enjoy Time on the Lake

Lake Michigan is one of the crown jewels of Chicagoland, and the long weekend presents a wonderful opportunity to enjoy it. Walk, bike, or jog along the winding Lakefront Trail, or hit the water by boat, kayak, paddle board, or jetski in your favorite spot downtown or out in the suburbs. Chicago's beaches typically open for the season on Memorial Day weekend, and all signs say that beaches will be open and accessible this summer. Bring a towel and your favorite book and catch some socially distanced sun.  For more aquatic opportunities? Check with your local parks district to see if your community's pools will be opening for summer 2021. You can also enjoy an afternoon on the Chicago River, whether floating in a kayak or seeing the sights on a relaunched architecture boat tour.

2.) Catch Some Fireworks

While fireworks were largely curtailed throughout 2020, Chicagoland residents can expect some exciting displays to return this year. To celebrate its phased reopening, Navy Pier is hosting a 10-minute fireworks display every Saturday in May. Keep an eye out for more news about fireworks displays in your community as we get closer to Memorial Day.

3.) Enjoy a Meal in the Great Outdoors

There's no better way to welcome summer than by enjoying a celebratory meal in the open air. This Memorial Day, there are more options for outdoor dining than ever before. If you're staying close to home, fire up a Chicago-style hot dog or another local classic in the backyard. You can also order in full Memorial Day feasts via delivery, as well as DIY grilling and cocktail kits sourced from many of Chicagoland's most exciting restaurants. Pack a picnic to enjoy in one of Chicagoland's most scenic parks. More and more restaurants are also reopening their patios and rooftops for socially distanced outdoor dining; you can find a handy running list of al fresco eateries, bars, and breweries that are open for business here, courtesy of Choose Chicago.

4.) Spend Some Time In Nature

Want to see the flourishing trees and flowers of late spring up close and in person? Memorial Day weekend is a perfect time to head out and explore Chicagoland's beautiful natural attractions. In addition to the marquee destinations like the Morton Arboretum, Garfield Park Conservatory, Starved Rock State Park, and Chicago Botanic Garden, consider paying a visit to the small parks, trails, and greenspaces in your community.  You can find our list of some of Chicagoland's most amazing outdoor sights and attractions here.

5.) Explore Art and History With a Local Museum

Like restaurants and stores, museums are reopening across Chicagoland with plenty of safety procedures in place. The long weekend can be a perfect opportunity to visit a museum that may have been on your list. See the amazing displays of the Art Institute of Chicago or the Museum of Contemporary Art, step back in time at the Chicago History Museum or the Naper Settlement, or explore the amazing offerings of legendary local institutions like the National Museum of Mexican Art, the DuSable Museum of African American History, the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian, or the Elmhurst Art Museum Want to spend the weekend in a neighborhood known for its museums? 6.) See a Drive-In Movie

As any cinephile will tell you, Memorial Day weekend has long signalled the start of summer movie season, when all the big blockbusters head to theaters. And while movie theaters are slowly phasing screenings back in, movie fans can still get their cinematic fill by enjoying a show at one of Chicagoland's outdoor drive-in movie theaters, with options including ChiTown Movies in Pilsen, the Drive-In at Lincoln Yards, and the Chicago Drive-In.

7.) Support Your Favorite Local Businesses

If you're a dedicated deal hunter, you know that Memorial Day often means sales. This season, you can show your support to your community and find your next treasure by shopping at small boutiques and stores in your community. Go shopping for yourself or a friend at your favorite nearby stores, or consider purchasing gift cards, memberships, or subscriptions to local businesses as a start-of-the-summer gift for friends and family.
