Oakbrook Terrace is located in DuPage County and the west suburbs of Chicago, approximately 17 miles west of the Chicago Loop. Oakbrook Terrace is also located just north of the Ronald Reagan Memorial Highway (Interstate 88).

Nearby communities and suburbs include Oak Brook, Villa Park, Lombard, Elmhurst, Berkeley, Hillside, Clarendon Hills, and Westmont.

History

The Potawatomi Native Americans were the first occupants in the area that is now known as Oakbrook Terrace. White settlers began to move to the area in the 1830’s and established homes in the area also known as Salt Creek. In 1873, Albert Knapp built a creamery and cheese factory known as “The Corners.”

The town that formed was called Utopia around 1881 and was a primarily agricultural and farming area. The transition to a suburban community began after World War II when the area was subdivided. Commercial development began and Utopia was incorporated in 1958. After neighboring Oak Brookannexed many of the areas of Utopia, the name was changed to Oakbrook Terrace in 1959.

Residential growth occurred in the 1970’s with the building of many suburban homes and neighborhoods. In the 1980’s, commercial development grew rapidly including the building of DuPage County’s tallest office structure that stood at 31 stories tall. Other area developments include a dinner playhouse called the Drury Lane Theatre.

The Elmhurst Metra Station located in the Central Business District gives the residents of Elmhurst easy access to the downtown Chicago Loop. The Union Pacific / West Line Metra Trains service provides a connection between Oglivie Transportation Center in downtown Chicago and Elburn in the far West suburbs.

Some of the local bus routes include Pace Bus Route 747 – DuPage Connection, which offers transportation from Forest Park to as far west as Winfield. Popular stops include connection to CTA Forest Park Blue Line Station, Wheaton Metra Station, Oakbrook Center, and Central DuPage Hospital.

Pace Bus Route 877 – South Suburban Oakbrook Limited connects the west suburbs and the south suburbs via the Tri-State Tollway. From Lombard and the Oak Brook Center, route 877 also travels to south suburban Harvey and Blue Island and the Harvey Transportation Center. Other bus routes that connect the West and the South suburbs include Pace Bus Route 888 – Tri-State Flyer.

Pace Bus Route 322 – Cermak Road – 22nd Street has service between Cicero and Oak Brook and many important destinations in between. Some popular stops include North Riverside Mall, Yorktown Center, CTA Pink Line Trains, and Oakbrook Center.

Their daily drink specials offer a variety and many delicious beers and mixed drinks for a low price.

Entertainment

Oakbrook Terrace Shopping includes many local retail and fashion shops. Nearby malls include the Oak Brook Shopping Center which has tons of high end department stores as well as some of the best restaurants in the Chicagoland area. One of the local movie theaters include the CC York Theatre in Elmhurst which always has the latest new releases and a large concession stand with tons of snack options and buttery popcorn.
