The Village of Lombard was once part of Potawatomi Indian lands. The Village shares its early history with Glen Ellyn. The area was once known as “Babcock’s Grove” named after Ralph and Morgan Babcock, two brothers who settled in a grove of trees along the DuPage River. A stagecoach service connected Babcock’s Grove and Chicago by 1837.
Around the same time, Sheldon and Harriet Peck moved from Onondaga, New York to Babcock’s Grove. They purchased 80 acres of land to farm. The Peck house served as the area’s first school and was also reported to have been a stop on the Underground Railroad. The house was restored by the Lombard Historical Society.
By 1849, Babcock’s Grove began to expand rapidly due to arrival of the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad. As a result, the stagecoach line went out of business and the first post office, general store, and hotel were built near the train station. Lombard was officially incorporated in 1869 named after Chicago banker and real estate developer Josiah Lombard.
Lombard’s history with lilacs started in 1910 when William R. Plum, a retired Chicago lawyer and Civil War veteran, began collecting lilacs for his garden. The Lombard resident had collected more than 200 hundred varieties of lilac bushes. By 1927, Plum donated his estate to the village. The garden became Lilacia Park and his home a public library. The first Lilac Festival started in 1930 which still continues annually during May.
