Tinley Park is located in the southwest suburbs and approximately 25 miles away from downtown Chicago. Access to Chicago is easy from Tinley Park by either a 35 minute drive or a Metra train ride on the Rock Island Service.

Located partially in Will County, Tinley Park is mainly within the boundaries of Cook County. Neighboring communities include Orland Hills, Oak Forest, Orland Park, Frankfort, Country Club Hills, Mokena, Matteson, and Midlothian.

Interstate 80 runs through Tinley Park and provides access to Iowa and Indiana. Tinley Park is also located west of interstate 57 which runs north to Chicago or south to central Illinois.

Garrett Jones graduated from Victor J. Andrew High School and became professional Major League Baseball player, playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Gary, Merle, Tony, and Tony Jr. Bettenhausen all hail from Tinley Park and are professional race car driver who have raced in Nascar.

History

In 1835, the John Fulton family arrived from New York before to develop a community that would eventually be known as Tinley Park. Many Germans immigrants moved into the area during the 1840’s, and by 1852, the Rock Island and Pacific Trains were constructed passing through the settlement.

The area began to develop into an agricultural community. By 1869, a grain elevator was constructed, and in 1872, a Dutch-style windmill became an important part of the agriculture in the area. After World War II, affordable housing in Tinley Park attracted young couples to the area.

An outdoor music venue opened in Tinley Park in 1990. Although it has changed names multiple times, the First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre brings music festivals and live music to Tinley Park all summer. Some of the events held at the Amphitheatre include Ozzfest, Warped Tour, Mayhem Fest, Projekt Revolution, Q101 Jamboree, Farm Aid, and Lollapalooza.

Today, Tinley Park residents are over 50,000 in numbers. But the village continues to preserve its history through maintaining the historic district and beauty of downtown Tinley Park.
