History

The village of Norwood Park was incorporated in 1874. Originally, the community selected Norwood as its name which came from a novel titled, “Norwood: Or, Village Life in New England” written by Henry Ward Beecher. However, at that time, there was another village with the same name so the citizens added the surname “Park” in honor of their forest-country scenery.

The area’s first settlers were English farmers who came to Norwood around 1830. Over time, German, Poles, and Scandinavian immigrants came to the area to work for the railroad companies and help build the community. By 1893, Norwood Park was annexed to Chicago.

Officially, two neighborhoods make up Northwood Park community: Old Norwood Park and Norwood Park. Old Norwood Park is a quiet residential area bordered by trees and foliage home to many older historical properties.
