While you’re freshening up all of the nooks and crannies around your home, there are a few spots you may have missed. For those who are especially meticulous, below are some useful tips and tricks for items and places you might not think to clean.
Washing and Whitening Your Pillows
What You Will Need:
– hot water
– 1 cup of laundry detergent
– 1 cup powdered dishwasher detergent
– 1 cup of bleach (natural bleach alternatives can be used as well)
– ½ cup of borax
First and foremost, check the label of your pillows to be sure that they are machine washable. Remove the pillowcase and fill the washing machine 1/3 of the way with hot water. Add the laundry detergent, dishwasher detergent, bleach and borax to the machine. Start the washing machine, and allow it to agitate the solution so that it dissolves, then add the pillows. Next, allow the pillows to agitate and turn the pillows over halfway through the cycle. Finally, after the full cycle, dry down and feather pillows by air cycle, for synthetic pillows, use the low heat setting.
Deep Cleaning the Dishwasher
What You Will Need:
– distilled white vinegar
– baking soda
– old soft toothbrush, q-tips, toothpicks
– paper towels
Start with an empty dishwasher. Fill one side of the kitchen sink with distilled white vinegar (about one to three cups of vinegar with a half full sink of water). Remove the utensil holders and racks, and wipe them down with a solution soaked paper towel. Repeat this step with the arm, grate, and filter. Next, use a damp rag that is wet with the vinegar water to wipe down the inside and edges of the door, using the toothbrush or q-tips for the small and hard-to-reach places. Reassemble and replace all parts. Last, add two cups of white vinegar to the bottom of the dishwasher, and turn it to energy or low wash. Then, stop the machine mid-wash, so the vinegars sets on the bottom for about 20 minutes. Turn it back on to finish the cycle. Wipe out the inside with dry paper towels.
