How to Accommodate Summer Guests

The summer months are a time for family, friends and often out-of-town guests. While you might think you don’t have enough space for Aunt Sally and Uncle Fred, with just a few quick adjustments to your home you can create your very own guestroom…sans renovation!

An air mattress is a great way to create an extra “bedroom” for overnight visitors. Not only are they available in just about every major department and outdoors store, they come in a variety of sizes to fit any storage situation. Simply move your coffee table out of the way and inflate your guest room. You can also look into purchasing a sleeper sofa or even a sleeper chair.

Think of a few bedroom-like touches you can make to your impromptu guest room to create a more pleasant stay. Place a lamp next to the sleeping area. Make sure there are empty plugs for cell phone and laptop chargers. Leave out extra pillows and quilts. If you’re worried about leaving these items out in the open, many stores offer affordable storage ottomans for just this occasion.

It’s important to give your visitors as much of a sense of privacy as possible. Designate a guest bathroom and make sure the door locks. Put out a set of clean towels for each guest, and place several rolls of toilet paper and boxes of tissue under the sink. Consider making your guest a care package with soap, an extra toothbrush and other bathroom essentials.

Having a home filled with guests can quickly feel cluttered and chaotic. Before family and friends arrive, clear an extra place for luggage. If you’re lacking in space, find a spot under an end table or a corner of your living room. To really make guests feel welcome, purchase a luggage rack or wall hooks to hang important items.
