Prep Your Home For Vacation

A vacation full of sunshine, delicious food and relaxation may be right around the corner, but for now it’s time to plan for your trip. Before you ditch all of your checklists – did you remember the sunscreen – here are a few things to consider taking care of around your home before you leave.

Indoor To-Do
Make your return home as pleasant as possible by doing your laundry ahead of time. Strip the beds, pick up that pile of clothing and toss it all in the wash. While you’re waiting on the spin cycle, do some basic dusting and vacuuming.

Since you don’t want to come home to an astronomical electric bill, adjust your thermostat and unplug any unnecessary appliances before you leave.

Outdoor To-Do
You never know what Chicago weather will bring, so make sure to prepare your outdoor space for whatever Mother Nature has in store. For dependent plants, use watering stakes or your most green-thumbed neighbor to help keep them blooming. Depending on how long you’re going to be gone, you may want to hire a lawn service to cut the grass at least once.

Prevention To-Do
Temporarily empty homes are at a high risk of burglary, but there are several steps you can take to avoid intrusion. It’s important to eliminate – or at least minimize – any sign that your home is unoccupied. Invest in a self-timer for your lighting. Tell your postal service to hold your mail for the duration of your trip. Check and double check that all points of entry into your home are locked and, if possible, alarmed. The last thing you need is to come home to an intruder decked out in the family jewels, eating your non-perishables and charging the hottest ‘New Releases’ to your cable service.

Now, go on vacation! You deserve it!
