Over time, the village built many farms and a large gristmill damn on the river. Later, a railroad depot was built in the village that helped expand the region’s population and economy, including linking residents to Chicago. South Elgin was incorporated in 1897. The village slowly developed over the next hundred years from a rural farming community to a modern small city with lots of public amenities.
