The area was first founded in 1833 when Lovell Kimball came from Watertown, New York and settled along the Illinois River area known as Grand Rapids. Kimball platted a community with the forsight that Illinois-Michigan Canal Bill would bring the canal through the area and housing would be in demand due to the jobs being created.

Kimball picked the name Marseilles after Marseilles, France since it was an industrial center in Europe, and Kimball intended the new Illinois town to be an industrial center as well. A photographic history of Marseilles is preserved to keep a photographic account of the community and its changes.
